Sent my amazing photographer Jamal to LIB 2016 this year. His MISSION, as usual, is to capture as much diversity as possible in the crowd in addition to capturing the essence of the event. His work is top and I trust him to get the assignment done.
The featured images in the first slide show are of the diversity found within this year's event. I have to say I was REALLY disappointed with the lack of People of Color in attendance. What is starting to get to me the most is that even in the marketing materials there are very few, if any people of color. Subliminally it makes POC not want to attend.
Come on LIB, let's try a little harder to at least make it seem a bit more inclusive.
Now I understand that he can't get everyone and I know a few personal friends that were in attendance he did not catch, but when asked, our conversation went like this:
"Was there lots of diversity this year?"
"Sad to say not as much as I'd hoped for. I tried to capture photos as much as I could but it was far and few in between. I was really disappointed..."
On the bright side. he shot some amazing images that still make me want to attend. I will never not want to go somewhere, just because there aren't many Black or Alternative people there. I am all about the experience and I have learned how to reach out enough on my own channels to let other POC know that by missing some of these festivals, they are missing out on a world of possibilities and experiences that they would have never imagined.
Next up... Woogie Weekend! Fingers crossed!!
